Public Defender

The Public Defender’s Office is responsible for representing individuals whom the Court has determined can not afford to hire an attorney and who are involved in a variety of legal matters. Specifically, Nebraska Statutes provide that it shall be the duty of the Public Defender to represent all indigent persons who are charged with a felony or misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment

The Public Defender is elected to a four year term by the voters of Sheridan County and may run for additional terms. As an elected official the Public Defender answers directly to the citizens of the county.
